Creating SMART Goals

 Setting SMART goals is the ideal way of going about goal-setting. 

Creating goals is crucial in soccer as it gives you an objective to aim at as you develop.

As 2018 rolls in and 2017 is now a year of the past, we, as athletes, need to reflect on 2017 but also set new objectives and fresh goals for the new year. It is super important one sets an end-result for themselves as it gives something to aim at rather than just improving for improvement sake. Setting goals gives one a purpose for their daily actions. Setting goals is easy to do, but also easy not to do. It is also easy to set a goal but never end up working on it. This is where consistency, focus and that hustle mentality come into play.

 

What are SMART Goals?

SMART Mnemonic Acronym

 

SMART is a mnemonic acronym that stands for the guidelines of goals being specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. There are many versions of this acronym, but I feel these combination of words are the best.

Many entrepreneurs and people with success use this system when outlining their goals. SMART helps goals become more purposeful and provides you with a better idea of the actions you want to commit to when setting goals.

Which one sounds better?

  1. I want to become a faster and stronger player soon.
  2. By the end of April of 2018, I want to have a 50m dash of fewer than 6.5 seconds and have my compound lifts’ max be 100% more than right now.

How to Design SMART Goals

Specific

Goals have to be clear and definite. Knowing exactly what you want to accomplish can increase your drive to truly meet your goal. When building a goal, always know the W’s to how you want to accomplish your goal.

  • What: What is it exactly that you want to accomplish?
  • Why: Everything must have a reason. Why is it that you want to accomplish this goal. How does it bring you closer to your ultimate aspiration?
  • Where: Where do you need to be to reach your goal?
  • When: Every goal must have a time frame. More on that later on in the article.
  • Which: Which environment must I surround myself with to accomplish my goals? What resources would I need?



Measurable

You must be able to tell whether or not you have met your target. Having a measurable goal also helps you keep track of your progress and have more clarity on the next steps.

You need to be able to know when you have accomplished your goal.

A non-measurable goal: I want to become stronger.

A measurable goal: I want to increase my deadlift and squat by 80lbs this year.

Attainable

Your goals need to be realistic. Don’t get me wrong, your goal should be challenging and hard to reach, but your goal should be achievable and within your reach. You should also set goals as if they are in your control. Make the goal so that outside factors don’t have control over whether or not that goal is met.

You should ask yourself: How realistic is this goal? Is this goal attainable and achievable without the outside factors having control over it?

Relevant

Your goals need to be relevant to your ultimate aspiration. If your goal is to become a professional soccer player, your goal shouldn’t be too practice your bowling skills.

You also need to decide whether it’s the right time to attempt to achieve this goal. Maybe you need to learn new skills before venturing out onto reaching a certain goal.

Setting goals has to be worthwhile. You need to decide if your goal is actually helpful for your development or if it’s just bluff and it doesn’t have any effect.

 

Time-Bound

Arguably the most important of them all. Your goal needs to have a time-frame. It needs to have a target date to demand focus to it and add more motivation for you to reach that goal within that time period. Time is of the essence so this goal will steer your efforts into reaching your goal in time.

Your goal should also include ways you can work on achieving it on a monthly, weekly, daily, or even yearly basis. That way your consistent effort will build up and assure you a completed and achieved end-product.
